GalaxyUI

An immersive alternative to window based VR UI. Simple and intuitive gestures make learning and using it feel like magic.

Cooperative Development

In cooperation with fellow engineer Marvin Kissling.

The opportunities of XR and brain stormed design elements birthed the idea of controlling a Galaxy like a space wizard.

Our direction was a clear just from a clearly formulated design board and a single sketch that conveyed the immersive vision.

Developed with the Unity XR-Toolkit the project is openly available on GitHub.

The Result

An immersive alternative to window based VR UI. Interactions are designed to be seemless and utilise the advantages of three dimensional input. Simple and intuitive gestures make learning and using it feel like magic.

Use Gestures to summon the galaxy from the sky, send it flying back or make it disappear in the palm of your hands.

Interacting with the stars makes navigation simple, as they dynamically react with the galaxy.

The galaxy's central black hole can create new stars or delete existing ones, simply by touching it.

A haptic tutorial teaches you the basics. You will have to perform the actions yourself, not just read text.

Credits

GalaxyUI was a two person project together with Marvin Kissling supervised by Florian Baumann as a part of the VR/AR-Technologies course. The idea for the concept was created in collaboration with Marvin. He was responsible for many of the visuals effects. Every other feature was with some minor exceptions in its entirety implemented by me.
